Too little work surface in a small kitchen – Clever solutions for more space while cooking

When every centimeter counts

The work surface is the heart of every kitchen. Here, food is prepared, ingredients are chopped, dishes are arranged, and kitchen appliances are often used. However, especially in small kitchens, a lack of or insufficient work surface is one of the most common problems. Even coffee makers, kettles, or toasters take up valuable space, leaving hardly any room for actual cooking.

The good news: Even a small kitchen can be surprisingly functional. With thoughtful planning and a few clever ideas, the available space can be used optimally without sacrificing comfort or style.

Why is the work surface so important?

A generous work surface makes every task in the kitchen easier. It promotes order, improves ergonomics, and makes cooking significantly more enjoyable. Without sufficient space, ingredients have to be constantly rearranged or kitchen appliances moved around. This wastes time and quickly leads to a chaotic workflow.

Especially in small kitchens, every free centimeter is therefore of great importance.

Why is there often a lack of work surface in small kitchens?

There are several reasons why workspaces are becoming scarce:

  • Many electrical appliances are permanently placed on the worktop.

  • The kitchen was planned without sufficient preparation space.

  • Large sinks or hobs take up a lot of space.

  • Narrow floor plans only allow for short worktops.

  • Decorations or kitchen utensils take up unnecessary space.

Often it's not the square footage itself, but the inefficient use of the available space.

Clever solutions for more workspace

1. Keep worktops clear

Consider which appliances are actually used daily. Coffee makers and kettles can remain visible, while many other appliances can be stored in cupboards or a utility cabinet. A clear worktop appears larger and makes working easier.

2. Use the sink as additional work surface

Cover plates or custom-fit cutting boards transform the sink into an additional work surface in no time. This is a particularly practical solution when preparing vegetables or baking.

3. Install folding worktops

Folding worktops on the wall or pull-out elements under the existing worktop create additional space when needed and then disappear again to save space.

4. Choose multifunctional furniture

A small rolling cart or kitchen trolley with a worktop not only offers additional storage space but also provides room for dishes, kitchen utensils, or supplies. Thanks to its casters, it can be used flexibly.

5. Make optimal use of the height

Utilize free wall space with shelves, rail systems, or magnetic strips. Storing cooking utensils, spices, or knives on the wall keeps the work surface clear and organized.

Less is often more

Many small kitchens appear cluttered because too many things are permanently on display. A minimalist design creates a sense of calm and makes the available work surface seem larger.

Ask yourself regularly:

  • What do I actually use every day?

  • Which devices can disappear into the cupboard?

  • What kind of decoration makes sense?

  • Are there any items that take up unnecessary space?

Even small changes can make everyday life significantly easier.

Proper planning makes all the difference.

Sufficient work surface should be planned from the outset of the kitchen design. Ideally, there should be a continuous preparation area between the sink and the cooktop. This area is used most frequently during cooking and should be kept as clear as possible.

Even narrow kitchens benefit from continuous, uninterrupted worktops. Uniform materials and light colors make the space appear even more spacious.

Small details with a big impact

With a few simple measures, the work surface can be used even more efficiently:

  • Cutting boards with drip trays save space.

  • Stackable storage containers create order.

  • Narrow spice racks on the wall relieve the worktop.

  • Under-cabinet lights improve visibility while working.

  • Light-colored worktops reflect light and make the kitchen appear larger.

These small optimizations ensure greater comfort and a cleaner overall appearance.
